Course Objectives

Overview

Welcome to the Distributing Naloxone to Clients. This course is intended for RNs, RPNs, LPNs, social workers, occupational therapists, allied health and unregulated care providers who have college and/or manager approval to distribute Naloxone.  Allied health and unregulated care providers are able to distribute Naloxone, and RN/RPN/LPNs can dispense Naloxone.  For the purpose of this course, we will use the term "distribute" throughout, to include both terms.  By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Know how to recognize, respond and intervene in an opioid overdose
  • Identify which clients are in need of Naloxone kits and training
  • Identify the clinical practitioner roles currently authorized to distribute or dispense  Naloxone
  • Identify the factors that contribute to a drug overdose
  • Know the difference between opioid and stimulant overdoses
  • Know harm reduction strategies you can use with clients to help prevent an overdose
  • Understand the pharmacology of Naloxone
  • Know how to recognize, respond and intervene in an opioid overdose
  • Find information and training you need to provide to clients prior to distributing a Take-Home-Naloxone kit
